It’s not a very difficult thing to learn the basics of the guitar.  When I went off to college just about everybody that I knew learned how to play at least a little bit.  Sure, there were many of those individuals who were terrible at it, but at least they learned.  However, when it comes to really playing guitar it helps to know some more advanced techniques. Knowing alternate picking techniques can really help you on your speed and also help you develop some discipline on accurate your picking is.  Many new players throw on some distortion and hope for the best.
