My husband Marvin’s brother Randy is going to be getting married to his fiance Ann at the end of this month. Marvin will be Randy’s best man. Randy has asked Marvin if he would mind giving all of the wedding toasts and speeches. Randy knows that Marvin has a gift for writing and giving speeches. I watched the Video Music Awards last night and thank God there were no repeat of Kanye West’s lack of manners last year. As I’ve gotten ever-busier in my working life, I’ve been piling up gadgets that are supposed to help me with my burgeoning workload.  I have reminders going off left, right and centre.  It seems I work to a symphony of alarm calls these days.  But with that, I feel a loss of my autonomy.  I’m now reacting to things instead of being proactive.  There’s a sense I’ve lost control of my time.

So now I’ve abandoned all my gadgets and use a simple notepad and a set of mont blanc pens to write down my thoughts, my “to do”s , and my diary.  It’s incredibly simple, but the act of writing helps me remember and meditate (automatically) on what I am writing about.  I now never forget.
