Big new study shows that drinking alcohol can lower blood pressure

November 29th, 2009 by admin

Research in Spain provides fresh support to the idea that drinking alcohol can lower blood pressure. The Spanish have a high consumption of alcohol and low incidence of heart disease so it was a good place to do the study.

The findings are remarkable. They show that moderate drinking cuts the risk of heart disease in men by one third. But what is more interesting, and controversial, is that heavy drinking was revealed to cut heart disease risk by even more, by up to 54%!

The factors cutting risk were lower blood pressure, lower levels of cholesterol and clogged blood vessels. The findings do not apply to women but this was due to the limitations of this study. Further research with women is needed.

Of course critics are quick to criticize the study and point out that only moderate drinking can be healthy. It’s true that heavy drinking can damage other organs but “lifestyle preachers” have now been proved a bit severe in their judgements.
