According to the pergola plans, mark a rectangle measuring 10by 20 feet. Dig holes 20 inches deep and 12 inches wide at the four corners for the four support posts. Insert the posts and keep them vertical with temporary braces till the hole is filled with concrete. All four posts should be secure and level. Now take four 2 by 6 pieces, 20 feet long for the pergola beams. Fasten two beams to the posts on opposite sides by heavy duty 3 inch lag screws at a point 6 inches from the top of the post. Repeat the process for the other two sides. Cut 11feet long cross beams from the2 by6 lumber for the 10 feet side of the pergola. The extra 1 foot is for the 6 inches overhang on each side. Cut two sets of notches of one and a half inches to enable the cross beams to slide over the pergola beams. Once in place, fasten the cross beams with screws. Now cut 11 feet long slats from 2 by 4 lumber. Cut similar notches on them, place them over the beams and fasten them with wood screws. Finally apply the finish you want to complete the pergola.
